Driver pay
Driver pay and settlement software for small trucking companies
Paying drivers by hand means pulling every load, every mile and every advance into a spreadsheet each week. In LaneTally the weekly statement fills in from the loads the driver delivered, and the driver can see how it was figured.
No sign-up. No credit card. Fake data, just look around.
LaneTally is in beta. The demo uses example data, and anything you type in it stays in your browser. Join the waiting list — founding members get early access. Items marked Coming at launch are not working yet.
Choose how each driver is paid
Each driver keeps their own pay type, so a mixed fleet is not a problem:
- Per mile: dollars per mile, for example $0.58 a mile.
- Percent of the load: a share of the load rate, for example 27%.
- Flat per load: the same dollar amount for each load.
- Per hour: dollars per hour.
Team drivers split the pay 50/50 or the way you set it. You also mark whether each driver is a contractor (1099) or an employee (W-2). Pay for yourself and your office staff is kept separate from driver statements (see the last section).
Weekly settlement statements, filled in for you
There is one statement per driver per week, from their delivered loads. Approved detention and extra stops are added by themselves, with the driver's share. Then you add what changes from week to week:
- Bonuses and other extra payments.
- Advances.
- Fuel card and other deductions.
When you mark a statement paid, it goes into the books as driver pay. You never type it twice. See trucking accounting software.
Drivers see their own pay
In the driver app, "My pay" shows each weekly statement, what is not paid yet, and a "Your trips" table with how each load was paid. When a driver can check the math on their own, there are fewer phone calls on payday. Drivers see only their own loads and pay.
Detention pay that reaches the driver
The driver taps "I arrived" at the delivery and LaneTally starts counting waiting time. Each broker has its own free hours, rate per hour and time limits for reporting detention, and your Home tells you when detention started and when to send the request by. "Email the broker" opens an email with the arrival time, the appointment and the free time. Once approved, the driver's share is on their weekly pay.
The yearly pay summary in January
The Yearly pay summary shows what each driver earned in the year and which W-9 details are missing. It is information only, not a 1099. On screen only the last 4 digits of the tax number show. LaneTally does not file 1099s or make tax forms. When your accountant gives you a driver's 1099 or W-2, you can upload it, and the driver finds it under "Your tax papers" in My pay.
This is information only, not tax advice. Check with your accountant.
Who can run payroll
A carrier owner runs driver pay personally, or gives it to an Office / Bookkeeper team member. If the owner works with a dispatcher, they can turn on a switch that lets the dispatcher do the owner's books and pay, and turn it off at any time. Many dispatchers offer that as a paid service. See truck dispatch software and owner operator software.
Pay yourself, with taxes set aside
Owners and dispatchers have My pay for themselves. It shows what is left in the books, a tax set-aside (25% by default, you can change it) and what is "Available to take". Driver fuel receipts also feed your fuel by state for IFTA reporting. See trucking expense tracking for how receipts get approved.
Questions people ask
What is a driver settlement?
It is the statement that shows how a driver's pay for a period was figured: the loads, the miles or rate, extra pay such as detention, and deductions such as advances or fuel card charges.
Can I pay drivers different ways?
Yes. Each driver has their own pay type: per mile, percent of the load, flat per load or per hour. Team drivers can split 50/50 or your way.
Does LaneTally pay my drivers?
No. LaneTally figures the weekly statement and records it in the books when you mark it paid. You send the money the way you do today.
Does LaneTally file 1099s for my drivers?
No. It makes a yearly pay summary (information only, not a 1099) with what each driver earned and what is missing. Your accountant prepares and files the forms.
Can drivers see their pay statements?
Yes. Each driver sees their own weekly statements and trips under My pay in the driver app, in English or Spanish.
